Blogathon 2009 – Illuminares Report

Blogathon 2009 Vancouver for Vancouver Public Space NetworkThis blog post is part of Blogathon 2009, in which I am blogging for 24 hours straight in order to raise money for the Vancouver Public Space Network, an entirely volunteer-run organization who do advocacy and education on the public realm in my home of Vancouver, British Columbia. Please consider supporting by sponsoring me with a pledge, leaving a comment or contacting me to contribute a guest post.

Roland Tanglao redefines what it means to be a mobile enthusiast. He experiments with streaming video and almost every possible feature on his Nokia phones, and shares his love of food, work and life with his family and friends in East Vancouver on his blog at RolandTanglao.com.

Although our friend’s son’s fear of thunder meant we had to go home prematurely and do our own indoor Illuminares, we did manage to have a fantastic pre-Illuminares picnic. Which means we were able to experience a wee bit of the Commercial drive laid back hippy vibe, great structured “unstructure”, and “discoordinated” coordination that is Illuminares.

Time enough to reflect on how great of a public space John Hendry Park (the formal name for Trout Lake) is. I would like more public participatory events like Illuminares at Trout Lake. Perhaps something like an Electric Company performance? I would love to help “discoordinate” a mobile art performance with bicyclists, rollerbladers and other mobile people “getting in where they fit in” to form a chaotic artistic gestalt. Hmmm.
