You achieved notoriety with the "secret handshakes" comment - the president of the association read it and felt chagrined! He laughed about it later, and he then accused Florence of having written it, so it seems to me you've already made a big impact on AoIR. The future awaits.

Thanks :) - I'm indeed no regular reader but came here through technorati.
I'll keep my eyes open to spot you around here - if you spot me first (or see me tomorrow morning 8.30 at the sns panel), just approach me and we can talk about your paper! :)

I've had fairly good luck here so far - most people know me from when they were registering, so I'm not nearly as timid about this as I could be. A couple of recent positive conference experiences has also helped a lot - I just try to imagine/feel that everyone here at AoIR is as willing to talk about themselves as anyone else.

In other news, this may be the first time someone I'm planning on citing in a paper has commented in my blog as (I'm assuming) a non-regular reader. Welcome ;)

"but academic conferences, despite their critical nature, are totally events of Hierarchy and Cool Kids’ clubs and secret handshakes. As an undergrad, I do my best."

:) In a way you're probably right, but then I'd say the aoir-crowd is still very accessible compared to other conferences. just approach any of the other participants and ask them what they are doing, and you will get into interesting conversations really fast.
