It strikes me as a bit odd that my honours proposal demands that I’ll have the title of my project settled upon when I start my research. But that is pretty much the difference between an honours project and a blog post, so I get it.
Currently, the state of the proposal is that I have way, way too many questions, and that they are all each a master’s thesis in and of themselves. My mind puckers at having to, gasp, focus, but that is another scruple I understand, for I do intend to finish this research in 8 months and would like to have an end product that I can be proud of, unlike a lot of the stuff I’ve put out in university.
At the same time, after having read Tara Hunt’s post on Happiness, Anxiety and Control, I know what will make me most satisfied with any honors I do:
- being able to learn and interact with members of the community, and to be able to support them in their efforts in creating a more just society;
- being able to synthesize the experiences I’ve had into something meaningful and beneficial to others seeking to make similar changes;
- being able to help others more readily cope with the situations they find themselves in, and to transform the learning from those experiences into positive outcomes
Sounds kinda hokey, admittedly. I just finished watching Dan Gilbert’s TED talk, so I got an injection of uncynical speak. I do like having this to work backwards from when I do actually cook up the meat and bones of the proposal. Which should be soon-ish. Really.
