I’m in Vancouver this week – for Northern Voice, for information interviews, to apply to the Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue at SFU, for friends, for a belated Valentine’s Day, for Chinese New Year, and all that good stuff.
The short version of my trip so far:
- I arrived on Saturday night. I spent the plane ride knitting Richard’s gloves – they are absolutely perfect so far because I made all the mistakes on the first glove I made for myself. I left the second ball of yarn in Toronto though, so he definitely won’t have the full pair until March; but they are those pimped out half-finger gloves with a hood for a mitten. Complicated, yes, but I am optimistic that all the screwups I can possibly made I’ve already done.
- Sunday, Richard and I went (late) to the Chinese New Year celebrations in Chinatown. Richard took some pictures. We somehow ended up at the Drive eating chilli dogs at Belgian Fries. We would soon come to regret it, because a few hours later we were having yummy New Years food with my parents.
- Monday, I hung out with the Bryght guys putting together my application for the Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue. In order to re-acclimatize myself to the life of a student, I did it the day it was due. Well, OK, that’s not true – I did have a first draft of my statement of goals hammered out and 70% of my updated resume done. But I did have to ask for an extension – I hadn’t been able to pull through on my second reference letter.Luckily, that seems to not matter! I received an e-mail 10 minutes ago asking for an interview. They’re supposed to all happen at once next Tuesday, but since I’ll be out of town by then, I’ve worked out a time to talk with the Dialogue program coordinator on Thursday.
- I went to Dressew yesterday after stopping by the bank (because there’s actually a branch within walking distance of me, for once!) – and had my stylish black knee socks knocked right off. (Guys, this is your one-sentence warning – I am going to knit-geek out now.) They were selling all their (admittedly quotidian) yarn for $1.99 a ball, but what I was fixated on was the double pointed needles. My big beef with knitting gloves in the past while has been the cost of dpn’s – they are just so pricy. Granted, they are wonderful – the 4.0mm Brittany bamboo needles I have are gorgeous to work with – but they also cost $10! I have really nice dpns from Daiso, which I got for $2 a pair – but they are way too long do gloves comfortably, especially the fingers. So when I saw needles going for as low as 99 cents, I was basically floored. I also bought a bunch of yarn for some crochet projects I’m wanting to do (a hat and a cute open work wrap-thing). I am so very tempted to go back, but I probably shouldn’t overcommit myself in the yarn department…
That’s it for now! But I hope to do some brainstorming / processing for Transit Camp soon!
