So, those last couple of weeks there…

So I’m looking at the counter at the top of the page there–ack, is there really only 5 days until I’m supposed to climb the CN Tower?!?! Yikes, but the scripts don’t lie. I’m kind of disappointed at myself because, while I did have a good two-week run at the gym there and I did go jogging that one time with my team members, I really haven’t trained as hard as I wanted to. Mostly that’s because I really overbooked myself in Vancouver, and also because I woke up on Thursday morning with the cold/throat thing/upper respiratory tract infection that is still giving me the occasional Kermit the Frog vocal moment; and though I made vague attempts to work out last week while sick, those more or less failed. And to make matters worse…I left my running shoes at work yesterday, which means I’ll be jogging in my walking shoes tomorrow (and it’s supposed to rain in Toronto).

Since I’ve got to know my team members a bit, I’ve concluded that, in accordance with my initial expectations, I will be the last of my team to be at the top of the CN Tower. One of my team members is a former speed skater. He and another one of the team members have done the climb before, with sub-30 minute times. The third member is another student who can outperform me hands down.

Am I worried? Heck no. It’s not like I was ever aiming for the ‘fastest team time’ award. Going up was always going to be hell; I’m just going to be less prepared for the hell than I had wanted to be, as is typical of me.

This climb was never supposed to be about dazzling myself with an amazing physical feat. It was about just being able to step up and say that I wanted to do it and to go do it, which I’m still going to do, even if I’m ill-prepared, even if I finish with a horrendous time.

I can be fast for this next year! /me guffaws
